Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research at Mercer provides students with hands-on experience that complements the breadth of their education.
At Mercer, students are given the opportunity to take the lead in top-level research endeavors, which transforms them into scholars who answer tough and relevant questions. Our students work closely with faculty members, not graduate students, in state-of-the-art facilities to complete projects that contribute new knowledge to their fields of study.
Additional Projects
Mercer researchers study ways to detect phthalates in everyday products
Walk through any drugstore, and you’ll see a variety of cosmetics and personal care products, from shampoos to skin moisturizers, proudly labeled as free of parabens and phthalates. These synthetic chemicals are commonly used in beauty products to make them last longer. They’re also found in a wide range of other items, from food packaging to detergents to medical devices.
Cookstove project provides students with new perspective on engineering
A class project brought to life concepts of sustainability, air quality and public health this semester. Dr. Adaline Buerck tasked her students with building cookstoves, an experience that gave them insight into engineering in developing countries.
Mercer simulation devices aim to fill need in rural medical training
A Mercer University team hopes to bridge a gap in medical training in rural Georgia and beyond with two new low-cost simulation devices.
Biology professor earns EXPy Award for gene project work
Dr. John Stanga has helped dozens of Mercer University students get research experience while making contributions to genome annotation projects.
Research projects explore Holocaust, life’s meaning, games, film
Every year, dozens of Mercer University students dedicate a portion of their summer to conducting research under the direction of their professors.
